Mistral AI announced a €3 billion Series D funding round on September 8, led by Samsung Electronics at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion. Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity were co-leads.
The company says the capital will expand frontier-model research and computing capacity for training, alongside infrastructure, commercial growth and its international footprint.
A broader investor and enterprise base
New investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Returning backers include ASML, which led the preceding Series C, as well as NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures and other financial investors.
At the time of the round, Mistral said it operated in 20 countries and supported more than 125 global enterprises in critical AI projects, naming Airbus, ASML and HSBC.
What Mistral means by sovereign AI
Mistral frames its strategy around giving organizations control over models, data, computing and deployed systems. Its announcement links open-weight models with infrastructure and products intended for use inside customers’ own boundaries, rather than describing sovereignty simply as the location of a model developer.
For an enterprise buyer, those are distinct choices: whether a model can be customized, where data is processed, who operates the compute and how deployed systems can be inspected.
The round extends Mistral’s backing across industrial and financial investors as the company seeks to combine model development with enterprise deployment and computing infrastructure. Its announcement sets those investment priorities without dated milestones for the additional training capacity or international expansion.
